Pokon Virnyi

Pokon Virnyi

(also poklon virnyi), a regulation that established the amount to be paid for the maintenance of the prince’s collectors of the judicial fees known as viry. Most scholars attribute the introduction of this measure to Iaroslav the Wise. The pokon virnyi stipulated that when a virnik (collector of the vira), accompanied by other officials of the prince’s administration, came to a locality, the local population or commune had to bear the cost of maintaining all the officials. A monetary payment could be substituted for payment of the pokon virnyi in kind.
