axial-flow compressor[′ak·sē·əl ′flō kəm′pres·ər] (mechanical engineering) A fluid compressor that accelerates the fluid in a direction generally parallel to the rotating shaft. axial-flow compressor A compressor used in gas turbine engines in which the flow of air is maintained parallel to the compressor shaft. An axial-flow compressor is made up of several stages of alternate rotors and stators. The number of stages of compression determines the compression ratio. An axial flow has high efficiency in that it has lower fuel consumption at a given power and a higher compression ratio. It can cater for a large mass flow and, hence, is suitable for high-powered engines. |
