ton-mile[′tən ′mīl] (civil engineering) In railroading, a standard measure of traffic, based on the rate of carriage per mile of each passenger or ton of freight. Ton-Mile a unit of measurement for freight transportation by oceangoing vessels. Ton-miles are calculated by multiplying the weight of the cargo in tons by the distance traveled by the vessel in nautical miles. In the USSR, the ton-mile is used for planning and calculating the freight turnover of oceangoing vessels. In other types of transport, freight turnover is measured in ton-kilometers (1 nautical mile equals 1.852 km). |
