Tonkovetka

a Middle-Russian summer variety of pear; the most winter-hardy variety of pear. The tall and sturdy trees first bear fruit in the seventh to tenth season. The medium-sized or smaller fruits have a long, slender, and somewhat curved peduncle. They are only tenuously attached to the branches and fall readily. The flesh is tart and somewhat astringent. The fruits, which ripen in late August, do not store well (only a few days). An adult tree yields 250–300 kg annually. The fruits are eaten in fresh, dried, or processed form. The variety is distributed in several oblasts of the European USSR.
