Inadequate blood flow through the arteries that supply nutrients and oxygen to the structures at the base of the brain, esp. the brain stem and cerebellum. This can cause difficulties with balance, swallowing, or vision and may be a source of vertigo in some individuals, esp. older adults or those with atherosclerosis. See also: ischemia
