In E central CA, east of Stockton; original county; organized Feb 18, 1850 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the Tuolumne River, named for either the Central Miwok or Yokut Indians, of Penutian linguistic stock. Name is believed to be a corruption of Indian talmalamne 'cluster of stone wigwams': they lived in caves or recesses in the rocks. Variously spelled Taulamne, Tahualamne, and Tavalames.
