Established: Authorized on November 10, 1978.
Location:53 miles of the New River between the towns of Hinton and Fayetteville in southern West Virginia.
Facilities:Campgrounds, picnic area, rest rooms (é), boardwalks, cabin rental, visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit.
Activities:Camping, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, swimming, boating, kayaking, whitewater rafting, fishing, hunting, climbing.
Special Features:A rugged, whitewater river, flowing northward through deep canyons, the New is among the oldest rivers on the continent. The free-flowing river falls 750 feet in 50 miles from Bluestone Dam to Gauley Bridge, creating one of the finest whitewater rivers in the eastern United States. It is abundant in natural, scenic, historic, and recreational features.
