Nitix

Nitix

A Linux-based operating system from Net Integration Technologies Inc., Markham, Ontario, known for its comprehensive and unique package of services. In 2008, the company was acquired by IBM, and Nitix was made part of Lotus Foundations.

Nitix automatically discovers the network it is connected to, sets up the firewall and reconfigures it as services are added and deleted. It provides unattended, automatic backups and disk-based recovery in the event of failure. Nitix also manages up to five ISP connections, load balancing between them and manages failover if one goes down.

A Lot of Server
This earlier Nitix-based appliance packed a lot of services into a small box. It included built-in Web, email, VPN and network access servers, a firewall and file and print services for Windows, Mac and Linux networks. Its three Ethernet ports were used to connect two ISPs to the LAN to provide automatic failover if one connection went down. (Image courtesy of Net Integration Technologies Inc.)
