McNichols, Stephen L. R.

(1914– ) lawyer, governor; born in Denver, Colo. Briefly an FBI agent, he practiced law in Denver before joining the navy in World War II (1942–46). An assistant U.S. attorney general (1946–48), he became a Colorado state senator (Dem., 1948–54). As governor (1957–63), he improved conditions for migrant workers and established a state resources development office. He later opened a Denver law firm.
