Nisbet, Robert A. (Alexander)

(1913– ) sociologist; born in Los Angeles. He had a long academic career, mostly at the University of California: Berkeley (1939–53) and the University of California: Riverside (1953–72). He repeatedly returned to the importance of community in works such as The Quest for Community (1953), History of the Idea of Progress (1980), Prejudices (1982), and Teachers and Scholars (1992).
