(lăk`lən măk`əntŏsh'), 1725–1806, American Revolutionary general, b. Scotland. He was brought as a child to a Scottish settlement, which is now Darien, Ga. In 1776 he joined the Continental army. The next year he fatally wounded his personal and political foe, Button GwinnettGwinnett, Button,
c.1735–1777, American political figure, signer of the Declaration of Independence, b. Gloucestershire, England. Emigrating to America, he became a Georgia planter and merchant. In 1776–77, he was a Georgia delegate to the Continental Congress.
