(ēl′sē-dē′) Short for liquid-crystal display. A low-power, flat-panel display used in many digital devices to display numbers or images. It is made up of a substance that is almost liquid, but also has a crystal structure like a solid, sandwiched between filtering layers of glass or plastic. When the device is turned on, the molecules of the "liquid crystal" twist so that they can either reflect or transmit light that falls on them to produce the number or image indicated by a computer.

(Liquid Crystal Display) A screen display technology developed in 1963 at the David Sarnoff Research Center in Princeton, NJ. All computer and most TV screens are LCDs (see LED TV), while mobile device screens may be LCD or organic LED (see OLED). By the 1990s, color LCDs helped laptop sales boom, and LCD computer monitors outsold CRTs for the first time in 2003. See liquid crystal, LCD types and LCD categories.


A Color Pixel

An autosomal dominant (OMIM:122200) form of corneal dystrophy characterised by wispy, greyish, cotton-like threads limited to a zone between the centre of the cornea and the periphery, with slowly progressive loss of vision by the fifth or sixth decade of life.
