My Lai

a hamlet in the village of Song My, in the province of Quang Ngai, South Vietnam. My Lai has become a symbol of the inhuman brutality of the American military during the war of aggression in Vietnam. On Mar. 16, 1968, approximately 500 inhabitants were shot to death, buildings were burned, and domestic cattle and crops were destroyed. The American military strove through these actions to intimidate the people of South Vietnam and force them to halt their support of the patriotic forces, which were waging a just battle for freedom and independence.
