Nippy Lug Day

Between February 6 and March 12; Friday following Shrove TuesdayA "lug" at one time referred to the ear-flap of a man's cap, but in Scotland and northern England it became a synonym for the ear itself. In 19th-century Scotland, schoolchildren called their teachers "nip-lugs" because they often pulled their pupils' ears as a disciplinary measure. In Westmorland, England, it was traditional at one time for children to pinch each other's ears on the Friday following Shrove Tuesday, giving rise to the name Nippy Lug Day.
