(1) A geographic area covered by a cellular carrier, generally no more than a mile and a half in diameter. Microcells are used in cities and other densely populated venues. The smaller "picocell" reaches approximately 600 feet, whereas the traditional high-power "macrocell" tower can cover an area as large as 20 miles in diameter or more.
