Mykiss
Mykiss (Salmo mykiss), a fish of the family Salmonidae. There are diadromous and resident forms. The diadromous mykiss is up to 100 cm long and weighs up to 22 kg. In the sea it is silvery with many black spots on the back and tail; in fresh water it has a longitudinal pink strip, and its gill covers are pink. Resident forms are up to 45 cm long and weigh up to 2 kg. There are spots over the entire body, and a bright stripe runs along the lateral line. The mykiss is found in Kamchatka. The diadromous form enters only the rivers along the western coast of the peninsula. While its gonads are still immature, the mykiss enters rivers in late autumn to spawn. After spawning it migrates downstream to the sea for feeding; it does not feed in fresh water. It is commercially valuable in Kamchatka and is fished for sport. Its acclimatization in the European USSR and its rearing in ponds are under consideration. |
