A medically qualified doctor in the UK who has undergone a minimum of 4.5 years of specialist training (ST1, ST2, ST3, etc.) if studying microbiology alone, but 6 years if the candidate chooses joint training in microbiology and infectious diseases (the latter of which requires membership of the Royal College of Physicians).
As with all doctors in the UK, specialist training begins after completion of Foundation Years 1 and 2 (FY1 and FY2) and requires that the candidate competes for and obtains a National Training Number (NTN). At the end of the first year, the trainee takes an exam, after the successful completion of which, he or she chooses to continue training in bacteriology (most commonly), virology (which also has specialist training), mycology or parasitology, or the infections in particular clinical fields, such as haematological malignancy, HIV and sexually transmitted infections.
