[′lō·kəl ′mak·sə·məm] (mathematics) A local maximum of a function ƒ is a value ƒ(c) of ƒ where ƒ(x) ≤ ƒ(c) for all x in some neighborhood of c ; if ƒ(c) is a local maximum, ƒ is said to have a local maximum at c.
