Makassar Strait a strait between the islands of Borneo (Kalimantan) and Celebes, joining the Celebes Sea in the north and the Java Sea in the south. Length, approximately 500 km; width, about 200 km; and depths, to 2,458 m. The currents are monsoonal. Ports along the strait are Balikpapan (on Borneo) and Ujung Pandang (on Celebes). |
