Makarov, Oleg Grigor’evich

 

Born June 6, 1933, in the village of Udomlia, Kalinin Oblast. Pilot and cosmonaut of the USSR. Hero of the Soviet Union (Oct. 2, 1973). Became a member of the CPSU in 1961.

Makarov worked at a design bureau after his graduation in 1957 from the N. E. Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School. He joined the team of cosmonauts in 1966. As flight engineer he made a space flight with V. G. Lazarev on Sept. 27-29, 1973, on the Soyuz 12 spacecraft. The spaceship made 32 orbits around the earth in 47 hours 16 minutes. Makarov carried out a program of scientific investigations and tests of the ship and pressure-suit systems. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and several medals.
