Laza Lazarevic

Lazarević, Laza

Born May 1, 1851, in Šabac; died Dec. 29, 1890, in Belgrade. Serbian writer.

Lazarević first studied law in Belgrade; later, he studied medicine in Berlin and had a doctor’s practice. He began his literary career in the 1860’s with translations of the works of N. V. Gogol and N. G. Chernyshevskii. He will be remembered as a master of the literary profile and the psychological short story centered on acute dramatic conflict. Lazarević was called the Serbian Turgenev. Some of his works tend to idealize patriarchal relations.
