Adolphe Théodore Brongniart

Brongniart, Adolphe Théodore

 

Born Jan. 14, 1801, in Paris; died there on Feb. 18, 1876. French botanist and member of the French Academy of Sciences.

Brongniart was the son of Alexandre Brongniart. He laid the foundations of paleobotany. From 1833 he was a professor of botany and the physiology of plants at the Paris Museum of Natural History. He was one of the founders of the journal Annals of the Natural Sciences. Brongniart wrote detailed works on embryology (1828), plant physiology (1831), paleobotany (1828-38), and the history of botany (1868).
