The national information infrastructure encompasses a wide range of equipment, including cameras, scanners, keyboards, facsimile machines, computers, switches, compact disks, video and audio tape, cable, wire, satellites, fiber-optic transmission lines, networks of all types, televisions, monitors, printers, and much more. The friendly and adversary personnel who make decisions and handle the transmitted information constitute a critical component of the national information infrastructure. Also called NII. It is the satellite, terrestrial, and wirelesscommunications systems that deliver content to homes,businesses, and other public and private institutions. It isthe information and content that flows over the infrastructurewhether in the form of databases, the written word, a film,a piece of music, a sound recording, a picture, or computersoftware. It is the computers, televisions, telephones,radios, and other products that people will employ to accessthe infrastructure. It is the people who will provide,manage, and generate new information, and those that will helpothers do the same. And it is the individual Americans whowill use and benefit from the NII. The NII is a term thatencompasses all these components and captures the vision of anationwide, invisible, seamless, dynamic web of transmissionmechanisms, information appliances, content, and people.
