An alternative to the Heimlich manoeuvre when a patient is unconscious or lying down. With the patient on his or her back, the heel of the hand is placed just above the navel, the free hand is paced on top of the other hand, the arms are kept straight and four rapid thrusts are made downwards and in the direction of the head.
