(from English midshipman). (1) Petty officer, a military noncommissioned officer’s rank in the navy of the USSR that existed from 1940 to 1971.
(2) Warrant officer, a military rank of servicemen in the navy (on ships and vessels and in combat-security coastal units) and in the naval units of the Frontier troops of the USSR introduced on Jan. 1, 1972, for persons who have completed their active military service and who have volunteered for military service as specialists (officers’ assistants) for a definite period.
(3) Ensign, a junior officer’s rank in the Russian Navy until 1917.
(4) Midshipman, the military rank of an upperclassman of a naval college in Great Britain and the US Naval Academy.
