Mnatobi
Mnatobi
(Beacon). (1) A Georgian popular-science magazine, published from 1869 to 1872 in Tbilisi and edited by N. Avalishvili. The magazine exposed economic inequality, called for public education, and raised the question of women’s rights. Among its contributors were A. Tsereteli, A. Purtseladze, I. Chavchavadze, M. Gurieli, N. Lomouri, and G. Eristavi.
(2) A Georgian monthly magazine devoted to sociopolitical questions, literature, and the arts and the organ of the Georgian Union of Writers. It has been published in Tbilisi since 1924. During the 1920’s and 1930’s it played an important role in rallying representatives of various literary groups to the cause of Soviet literature. The magazine publishes the best works of Soviet Georgian writers and translations, including the works of M. Gorky and V. V. Mayakovsky. Circulation, about 14,000 (1973).
