Much of the island is under cultivation, especially the east coast. Kavieng is the chief town and port. The island was first sighted in 1616 but until 1797 was thought to be part of New Britain, from which it is separated by a 20-mi (32-km) channel. The island was a German protectorate from 1884 to 1914 and was called Neu Mecklenburg (New Mecklenburg) by the Germans. New Irelanda volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean, in the Bismarck Archipelago, part of Papua New Guinea. Area, 8,600 sq km. Population, 50,700 (1970), including adjacent islands. New Ireland has mountain massifs rising to 2,150 m, framed by coastal lowlands. The climate is hot and humid. Average monthly temperatures range from 25° to 28°C, and the annual precipitation exceeds 2,000 mm. The island is covered with equatorial rain forests. The main crop is coconuts.
