nonlinear
nonlinear[′nän‚lin·ē·ər] (physics) Pertaining to a response which is other than directly or inversely proportional to a given variable. nonlinear(Scientific computation) A property of a system whose outputis not proportional to its input. For example, a transistorhas a region of input voltages for which its output voltage isfound by multiplying the input voltage by the gain of thetransistor. Outside this region though, the transistorbehaves non-linearly, meaning that it does not obey thissimple equation. The behaviour of a system containingnon-linear components is thus harder to model and to predict.nonlinearA system in which the output is not a uniform relationship to the input. nonlinear adjective Not linear, randomnonlinear (non″lin′ē-ăr) Not linear; not obeying a linear relationship. In mathematics, a linear equation may be given in the form y = mx + b, where x is the independent variable, and y is the dependent variable. A nonlinear relationship cannot be represented by such an equation. nonlinear Related to nonlinear: nonlinear control system, Nonlinear optics, Nonlinear programming, Nonlinear regression nonlinear is not available in the list of acronyms.
