mmap

The Unix system call which establishes a mapping between arange of addresses in a user process's address space and aportion of some "memory object" (typically a file, one of thespecial "devices" /dev/mem or /dev/kmem or somememory-mapped peripheral). This allows the process toaccess a file at random byte offsets without using the seeksystem call or to access physical addresses or kernel'svirtual address space. It can also be used as analternative to writing a device driver since it is usuallysimpler to code and faster to use.
