Mayo survival model

A scoring instrument used to evaluate the immediacy of need for a liver transplant in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), which takes into account age, bilirubin level and histologic stage. The model was based on data from 418 patients seen at the Mayo Clinic, then externally cross-validated using PBC patients from other medical centres. It uses five independent prognostic variables: patient age, total serum bilirubin, serum albumin, prothrombin time and severity of fluid retention; of these, total serum bilirubin is the most heavily weighted. An advantage of the Mayo model is that it does not require liver biopsy.
