May General Strike of 1936

 

a strike that took place in Greece on May 13, 1936. It was organized by the Greek trade unions as a protest against the police massacre (on May 8-9) of striking workers in Salonica (Thessaloniki). It turned into a powerful demonstration by the working class of Greece for democratic liberties and against fascism and exploitation. Despite attempts to suppress it, the strike was supported by about 500,000 persons.
