Maichishan

a Buddhist cave monastery (fifth to 17th centuries) near the city of T’ienshui in Kansu Province, People’s Republic of China. It consists of 194 caves with clay and stone painted sculptures (fifth through 17th centuries) depicting Buddha and other divinities of the Buddhist pantheon and wall paintings in glue colors on dry surface (fifth century). The early sculptures of Maichishan (fifth and sixth centuries) are characterized by softly flowing forms, elegant grace, and spirituality; the later sculptures have features of sensuous earthly beauty.
