Maiak

 

an urban-type settlement in Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, 2 km from the Livenka railroad station (on the Makeevka-Ilovaiskoe line). A dairy and vegetable-growing sovkhoz is located there.


Maiak

 

(Beacon), a 24-hour informational and musical radio program in the USSR; the second program on All-Union Radio. Its call sign (music from the song “Moscow Nights” by V. P. Solov’ev-Sedoi) was first heard over the air on Aug. 1, 1964. The scheduling of Maiak makes it possible to keep listeners informed with maximum efficiency. Every 30 minutes, five-minute newscasts are transmitted. In addition, from 6:00 A.M. to 8:30 A.M. Moscow time (except for the time period 7:05-7:30 A.M.) and usually every 10-12 minutes, supplementary two-minute news-casts are transmitted. Maiak provides information about events in the sociopolitical, economic, and cultural life of the country and abroad. Each day it reviews basic articles from the newspapers Pravda, Izvestiia, and Sovetskaia Rossiia. It transmits sports news and weather information, as well as on-the-spot broadcasts and reports. The musical portion of Maiak during intervals between newscasts features miscellaneous and thematic concert programs and reports from concert and theater halls. Frequency scheduling provides for steady reception of Maiak broadcasts in various regions of the country.
