mountains in southern Italy. The Neapolitan Apennines consist of several massifs with elevations to 1,809 m (Mount Cervialto). They are composed of limestones, flysch, and volcanic rocks. On the slopes, Mediterranean shrubbery predominates. The plains in the foothills are cultivated and densely populated.
