Maxwell relation

[′mak‚swel ri′lā·shən] (electromagnetism) According to Maxwell's electromagnetic theory, that relation wherein the dielectric constant of a substance equals the square of its index of refraction. (thermodynamics) One of four equations for a system in thermal equilibrium, each of which equates two partial derivatives, involving the pressure, volume, temperature, and entropy of the system.
