hills in the northern part of the Deccan Plateau, in India; the eastern, highest part of the Satpura Range. Elevation, to 1,353 m. The hills are composed primarily of red sandstones and conglomerates. On the slopes there are forests of sal, teak, bamboo, and other species of trees, which have been seriously damaged by the slash-and-burn method of agriculture. There is a mountain climatic health resort at an elevation of 1,050 m, near the town of Pachmarhi.
