Bayazit

(present-day Dogubayazit), a town in northeastern Turkey (Agri vilayet). During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, a detachment of Russian troops (approximately 1,650 men) was besieged in Bayazit on June 6(18), 1877, by a Turkish detachment under Faiq Pasha (approximately 11,000 men and 11 guns); they heroically withstood a 23–day siege with provisions and water in short supply (by the time the siege was lifted rations were 50 g of rusks and one spoonful of water per man per day). The defense was led by Colonel I. Khan Nakhichevanskii, Captain Shtokvich, and Lieutenant Tomashevskii. On June 28 (July 10), the Yerevan detachment under General Tergukasov arrived, beat back the Turkish forces, and forced them to lift the siege.
