maximum thermometer[′mak·sə·məm thər′mäm·əd·ər] (engineering) A thermometer that registers the maximum temperature attained during an interval of time. maximum thermometerA thermometer that indicates the highest temperature reached since the instrument was last set. It may be mercury in a glass thermometer that is mounted horizontally. In the vacuum portion of the tube, there is a thin rod known as an index. When the liquid expands as the temperature rises, the index is pushed up. When the temperature decreases, the index remains at the highest value until the thermometer is reset by physically moving the index. A constriction as in a clinical thermometer prevents the retraction of mercury back into the tube. |
