Latin America, Institute of

 

part of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; a scientific research institution for the comprehensive study of the countries of Latin America. Established in Moscow in 1961.

The principal areas of the institute’s research include comprehensive studies of countries, economics, agrarian problems, political problems, foreign policy, international relations of the Latin American countries, inter-American problems, the building of socialism in Cuba, and the ideology and culture of the peoples of Latin America. In addition, the institute does research on the economic, political, and cultural ties between the USSR and the Latin American countries and on territorial and regional problems in the development of these countries. The institute offers full-time residential and correspondence graduate work. Since 1969 it has published the journal Latinskaia Amerika.
