Mount Rainier National Park

(rānēr`, rə–), 235,625 acres (95,395 hectares), SW Wash., in the Cascade Range; est. 1899. The area is dominated by Mt. Rainier, a volcanic peak 14,410 ft (4,392 m) high. The mountain is snow-crowned and has 26 glaciers, offering a challenge to serious climbers; its heavily forested lower slopes are popular with hikers. Established: Established on March 2, 1899. Wilderness designated on November 16, 1988.
Location:In west-central Washington. Year-round access is via SR 706 to the Nisqually entrance in the SW corner of the park. Limited winter access is available via Hwy. 123 in the SE corner of the park. The Carbon River/Mowich Lake area (NW corner) is accessed via SR 165 through Wilkeson. Summer access is available via Hwy. 410 on the north and east sides of the park.
Facilities:Campgrounds, picnic area, rest rooms (é), lodging, groceries, restaurant/snacks, visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Camping, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, mountain climbing, fishing, cross-country skiing, auto touring, wildlife viewing, ranger-led programs.
Special Features:This greatest single-peak glacial system in the United States radiates from the summit and slopes of Mount Rainier, an ancient volcano. The 14,410' mountain is surrounded by lush old growth forests, subalpine meadows, and a National Historic Landmark Districtthat showcases the log and boulder buildings typical of the "NPSRustic" style architecture of the 1920s and 1930s.
