lateral system[′ladṁəṁrəl ¦sisṁtəm] (navigation) In marine operations, a system of buoyage in which the shape, color, and number distinction are assigned in accordance with the buoy's location in respect to navigable waters; when used to mark a channel, the buoys are assigned colors to indicate the side they mark and numbers to indicate their sequence along the channel; the lateral system is used in the United States. |
