Livingstone Falls
Livingstone Falls
a series of about 32 rapids and waterfalls formed by the Congo (Zaire) River in its lower course. The falls are located between the cities of Kinshasa and Matadi (Zaire), where the river has cut through the Crystal Mountains. Total length of the stretch of rapids is 360 km, with a drop of 220 m. The Livingstone Falls are impassable to river vessels, so a railroad from Kinshasa to Matadi has been built around them. The Inga project to construct a powerful hydroelectric power plant on the falls (40 km above Matadi) has been planned and begun. The falls are named for D. Livingstone.
