Mel’nikov, Nikolai Prokof’evich

Born Dec. 7 (20), 1908, in the village of Byki, in what is now Dobrush Raion, Gomel’ Oblast. Specialist in structural mechanics and the theory of metal structures. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1939.

Mel’nikov graduated from the Kiev Civil Engineering Institute in 1934. He then served on the staffs of various scientific research and design organizations. In 1946 he became the director of the Central Scientific Research and Design Institute of Metal Structural Members.

Mel’nikov’s main works deal with the theory of the shaping of structures, methods of designing structures, and the analysis of the structural shape and parameters of buildings for metallurgical and machine-building enterprises, nuclear reactors, and blast furnaces.

Mel’nikov received the Lenin Prize and the State Prize of the USSR. He has been awarded the Order of the October Revolution, three other orders, and various medals.
