Andreev, Nikolai Petrovich

 

Born Nov. 11 (23), 1892; died Jan. 15, 1942, in Leningrad. Soviet scholar in the field of literature and folklore.

Andreev studied mainly Russian and Ukrainian fairy tales. In his book Index of Fairy Tale Subjects (1929), which played a great role in Soviet fairy tale studies, Andreev followed the Finnish scholar A. Aarne’s index of fairy tale types. Later Andreev sharply criticized the Finnish school. His works are Folklore and Literature (1936), Folklore in Nekrasov’s Poetry (1936), Pushkin’s Works in Folklore (1937), the reader Russian Folklore (1936), and the anthology Byliny (Russian epics; 1938).
