Matusevich, Nikolai Nikolaevich

 

Born Mar. 29 (Apr. 10), 1879, in Nikolaev; died May 27, 1950, in Leningrad. Soviet hydrographer and geodesist; vice admiral and engineer; Honored Scientist and Technologist of the RSFSR (1944).

Matusevich graduated from the Maritime Academy in 1904 and the University of St. Petersburg in 1909. In 1931 he became a professor at the Naval Academy. Between 1911 and 1931 he directed hydrographic work in the White, Barents, and Kara seas. A bay on Oktiabr’skoi Revoliutsii Island (Severnaia Zemlia) and a river flowing into it have been named in honor of Matusevich. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
