Nikolai Nikolaevich Bogoliubov

Bogoliubov, Nikolai Nikolaevich

Born Aug. 8 (21), 1909, in Nizhny Novgorod. Soviet mathematician and theoretical physicist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953; corresponding member, 1946) and the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1948). Hero of Socialist Labor (1969).

In 1925, Bogoliubov was accepted directly for graduate work at the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and then worked at the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He has been academician-secretary of the Mathematics Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1963 and director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna since 1965. Bogoliubov’s major works concern the approximation methods of mathematical analysis, mathematical physics, asymptotic methods of nonlinear mechanics, the theory of dynamic systems, statistical physics, and quantum field theory. He has developed a method of distribution function chains for nonequilibrium processes (1946), provided the mathematical ground for the microscopic theory of superfluidity (1947), provided the first proof of dispersion ratios in quantum field theory (1956), and constructed a mathematical theory of superconductivity (1958). The methods developed by Bogoliubov in the theory of superfluidity and superconductivity are also applied in other branches of theoretical physics, for example, in nuclear theory. Bogoliubov has founded scientific schools of non-linear mechanics, statistical physics, and quantum field theory. He is a member of many foreign academies—Bulgaria, the German Democratic Republic, Poland, the USA, and other countries—scientific institutions, and societies and is a participant in the Pugwash movement. A deputy to the seventh and eighth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, he received the State Prize of the USSR in 1947 and 1953 and the Lenin Prize in 1958. Bogoliubov has been awarded five Orders of Lenin, four other orders, and various medals.
