On the western border of the ID panhandle, north of Lewiston; organized May 14, 1888 (prior to statehood) from Kootenai County. Name Origin: For Latah Creek from a combination of two Nez Perce words, lakah 'place of the pines,' and tah-ol 'pestle.' The Indians found stones there to grind camas roots and shade in which to work.
