Nikolai Mikhailovich Karavaev
Karavaev, Nikolai Mikhailovich
Born May 26 (June 7), 1890, in the khutor (farmstead) of Novonikolaevskii, present-day Volgograd Oblast. Soviet scientist in fuel chemisty and technology; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946). Graduated from the Moscow Higher Technical School (1920); taught there until 1930 and then at other institutes in Moscow. From 1939 to 1951 he worked at the Institute of Fossil Fuels of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.
Karavaev’s main works deal with the study of Siberian coal (the Kuzbass and other basins) for purposes of industrial classification and the search for a method to ensure its efficient use in the national economy. His subsequent scientific research included the geochemistry and classification of fossil fuel. Karavaev was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, as well as medals.
