Nikolai Mezentsov


Mezentsov, Nikolai Vladimirovich

 

Born Apr. 11 (23), 1827; died Aug. 4 (16), 1878, in St. Petersburg. Russian state figure, adjutant-general (1871); member of the State Council (1877).

Mezentsov began military service in the guards in 1845 and served in the Crimean War of 1853-56. He was chief of staff of the corps of gendarmes in 1864, deputy chief of the gendarmes (1874), chief of the gendarmes, and chief of the Third Department of His Imperial Majesty’s Privy Chancellery (1876). Mezentsov was assassinated by S. M. Kravchinskii in retribution for the execution of the revolutionary I. M. Koval’skii.
