a pair of magnetic needles so mounted as to be nearly or quite astatic, as in some galvanometers.

[ā′stad·ik ′per] (electromagnetism) A pair of parallel magnets, equal in strength and having polarities in opposite directions, and perpendicular to an axis which bisects both of them; there is no net force or torque on the pair in a uniform field.
